March 2024 Boerne Business Buzz

Something big is coming to Boerne next month! The City of Boerne and Kendall County are in the path of a total solar eclipse, which is projected to bring tens of thousands to our community on and around April 8th. By now, most of us have hear about the upcoming eclipse, but is your business prepared? I’d like to share a few things that business owners and managers should consider as the eclipse date approaches.

Do you have back-up plans? Many businesses that don’t directly serve visitors have considered closing for the day, or having employees work from home. With added traffic and school closures throughout the region, transportation to and from work will be difficult. With so many added visitors in town, cell phone and internet services may become overwhelmed and inoperable. Do you have back-up plans to process payments for customers, such as having extra cash on hand to make change?

Do you have a communication plan? If your business is planning to have a closure, adjusted hours, or a special event, make sure that you’ve clearly communicated that information with clients and customers.

Have you rescheduled deliveries? If you have regularly scheduled deliveries at your location, it may be a good idea to get any needed items in the week before the eclipse, as traffic is expected to heavily increase on the Saturday and Sunday before the event.

Do you need to increase services for customers? We will have a large influx of visitors in the area, which means more need for restrooms, garbage receptacles, and parking. Your business may need to consider increasing these services for the event, or if that’s not an option, limiting those services for employees or customers only.

Do you have a safety or viewing plan? There will be an increased presence of emergency responders in our area, and we are so grateful for all the hard work and planning they’ve already done to keep our community safe. Discussing a safety plan or evacuation plan with employees before the event is a good way to prepare. If your business has outdoor spaces, consider offering employees and customers protective glasses to view this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon!
