Harvest Moon Celebration

25 Oct 2008

October 25th, Harvest Moon Celebration!

Mark your calendar, the Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau and Last Chance Forever Bird of Prey Conservancy have partnered together again for The 2nd Annual Harvest Moon Celebration, Saturday October 25th, from 2pm until 9pm at the Boerne Visitors Center. What makes this special is that it takes place on the beautiful lawn of the Historic Kingsbury House, the Boerne Visitors Center. Under the canopy of the heritage oaks, on the banks of the Menger Creek, visitors will experience a one of a kind Halloween night that they will never forget!

Gates open at 2 pm, when you can stroll the grounds and find a good seat. At 3pm and 5pm you will get an up close look at majestic Hawks, Falcons, Eagles and Vultures during two presentations by Master Falconer John Karger and the team from Last Chance Forever Bird of Prey Conservancy. This moving exhibition and flight demonstration is not to be missed.

Harvest Moon celbration is a festive old world evening of fun and celebration with a twist on the origin of Halloween, or Samhain. The Celts, who lived two thousand years ago in the area that is now Ireland, celebrated Samhain,  the end of summer and the harvest, by gathering with food and drink, building bonfires, playing music, wearing costumes, and attempting to tell each other's fortunes, as prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction for the long, dark winter.

At 6:00pm the celebration continues with live Celtic music by Austin's outstanding Celtic Band Poor Mans Fortune. There will be campfire storytelling, Candini, the strolling magician will be performing up close mind reading, magic and paranormal entertainment. Get free Astrology readings, play old fashioned games, purchase goods from Mary Brogans Irish Cottage, including Celtic jewelry. Food and drinks will be available, and Tiffany's Naturals will be doing henna tattoos.  There will be a kid’s costume contest, fun games for adults and kids, storytelling, marshmallow roasting on the bonfire, face painting, and good times for all! For those that love a good competition – a no hands pie eating contest featuring Boerne’s finest-Police Department vs. Fire Department.

Owls were also a common sight during Samhain, therefore forever linking them with Halloween. If you’ve ever been awakened by the call of a screech owl, you know why people associate owls with all things eerie, but as Halloween approaches, we want to take time to appreciate the creatures of the night. After dark, enjoy an intriguing look into the world of Owls on the torch lit “Trail of the Mysterious Night Flyers“. Live owls will be featured in their natural environment and an interpreter will be on hand at every station to present these marvelous creatures in this one of a kind, never been done adventure!

And last but definitely not least, this year Harvest Moon Celebration also introduces “Wild Hearts“, a Wildlife Art Exhibition. This first time exhibit features the dynamic works of local artists Bill Scheidt, Melanie Fain, Doug Roper, and Nichols Grimes, and includes some amazing raptor art from Last Chance Forever’s John Karger and Mike Hinkle. Anyone with a love for wildlife will certainly appreciate the talent of this group of artists.
